  • Add some pages with or without content.
  • Click on the page where you want to start a new Header or Footer (To start New Section) after leaving some pages for the first Header or Footer as given in the picture below.

  • Go to the “Page Layout” tab (in 2010 and earlier versions) or “Layout” tab (in 2013 and later versions).
  • Click on “Breaks”, and then click on the “Next Page” under “Section Breaks”.

  • To apply the new header or footer on other pages, click on the page where you want to start (To start New Section), then follow the 3rd, 4th and 5th step. 
  • Double click on the top of any page to open the blank Header and Footer.

  • Click on the page where you have started/applied the “Next Page” under “Section Breaks” before for new sections.
  • Afterwards, click on the “Link to Previous” to remove the previous (link) section of the Header or Footer.

  • In the same way, to remove the previous (link) section of the Header or Footer on all other pages, follow the above 8th and 9th step. 
  • Now start typing the Header or Footer of your choice from the 1st page. 
  • Note:         No need to apply the “Section Breaks” for the first page.

  1. First, add enough pages with content in your document. For example, add 8 or more pages

  1. To Accommodate Different Headers and Footers for Different/Each Pages in MS-Word, click at the beginning of the first line of the page you want. For example, click the 2nd page as given in the page below.

  1. On the Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click on the Breaks, and then select the “Next Page” under the “Section Breaks”.

  1. Now, to stop previous page Section Break (Header or Footer) or start new section to the next pages wherever you want, click at the beginning of the first line on the next page, rather than the page that you want to stop previous Header or Footer. For example, to stop at the 4th page and start from the 5th page, you should click only on the 5th page.

  1. Again, go to the Layout tab, click on the Breaks in the Page Setup group, and then select the “Next Page” under “Section Breaks”. ​

  1. After that, double click on the top or bottom of any page to open the Header and Footer Tools Design tab

  1. Now click on the page no. 2 where the first section break is being applied.
  2. Afterwards, click on the “Link to Previous” to remove the Previous Section Link for the Current Section.

  1. Then click on the 5th page where the next section break is being applied.
  2. After that, click on the “Link to Previous”

  1. Now click on the page no. 8 where the 3rd section break is being applied.

  1. Now, click in between 2nd and 4th page to select a page, which was between the first and second section breaks​

  1. Then enter the Header or Footer name you want and format them as you wish.​

  1. So, we left the 1st and 8th page, if you wish to type the Header on these pages, then you can.
  2. Lastly, click on the “Close Header and Footer”

The Header and Footer Tools Design tab is very useful to customize the header and footer you like. To open header and footer tool design tab, double-click on the top or bottom of any page or go to the Insert tab → click the drop-down arrow of the header or footer → select one of the pre-designed formats you like as in the picture below.

Header and Footer Group

On the Header and Footer Tools Design tab, the first group is Header, Footer, and Page number commands. These tools are pre-formatted and very useful to insert header, footer, and page number in a word document.

Insert

On the Header and Footer Tools Design tab, in the Insert group, we have more commands to insert pre-formatted date and time, document info, quick parts, picture, and online pictures. On the Header and Footer Tools Design tab, in the Navigation group, we have more commands to easily navigate from header to footer or vice versa as well as you can easily navigate to previous or next header or footer.  These tools are very useful to make header or footer easier. Options

On the Header and Footer Tools Design tab, in the options group, we have 3 commands. These are explained below.

Different First Page

Dou you want to insert all except first page header or footer, or all headers or footers except first page. The” Different First Page” on the Header and Footer Tools Design tab, in the Options group is very useful to insert by checking it.

Different Odd & Even Pages

By clicking “Different Odd & Even Pages” option, you can insert header or footer for only odd or even pages in your word document.

Show Document Text

You can show or hide the document text while applying the header or footer by using this option.

 Position

You can change the height of the header or footer in inches by using this option.

Close Header or Footer

To leave from editing option of the document header and footer and make keep document in normal position, click “Click Close Header and Footer”.

  • Initially, make sure your document pages has content.
  • On the insert tab, in the headers and footers group, click headers to expand its menu.
  • Then select one of the pre-formatted styles to apply header.
  • Edit blank header based on the content information.
  • Then click on “close headers and footers”.
